Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha Course meets once a week for 10 weeks, and includes an amazing retreat. You will enjoy great food, laughter and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple ... questions like - Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?
Alpha is for anyone who thinks there may be more to life than meets the eye. People attend from all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course. Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.
The Alpha Course will kick off for the Houston metro western region on Sunday, September 12 at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. Several churches within our area will come together to make this ten-week introduction of the basics of Christianity to as many people as possible who are living or working in Houston. The Alpha Course will be available at different times and locations, one of them being St. Martin's Episcopal Church (listed above).

Basic Bible Study -- The Seven General Letters in the New Testament
Room 207-209, Payne Education Center
The course is an eight-week, in-depth study of the seven General Letters following Hebrews in the New Testament. Written during the Apostolic period, between 45 AD and 90 AD, these letters offer an interesting insight into the early Christian community and the internal issues presented by false teachers, Gnosticism and the external influences facing believers which resulted in persecution.
This week: Christianity in the Apostolic Period
These letters are often referred to as "Primers" or sermons of the first principles of Christianity and, in many cases, are as applicable to the Christian community today as then.

Lectionary-Based Classes:
In the Eucharistic lectionary this fall, the focus is on the gospel of Luke, who stressed the call to discipleship. Luke approaches his writings through personal investigation and arrangement -- we are called to do no less on our journey with Christ. Luke reminds us that characteristics that exemplify discipleship are universality, prayer, joy and concern for the poor, all magnified by the power of the Holy Spirit.

10:15-11:00 AM
This week: The Letter of James
These letters are often referred to as "Primers" or sermons of the first principles of Christianity and, in many cases, are as applicable to the Christian community today as then.
Life: A User's Manual
Vestry Conference Room
We continue our study of the book, Journey to the Common Good, by Walter Brueggemann.
This week: Chapter 2
Lively discussions regarding current events, while facing the challenges of everyday life, are the basis for our small group gathering. Weekly we navigate through a provocative and stimulating book which challenges our faith and how we come to understand and put into practice what we believe as Christians.
Seekers Class
Activity Center, Aerobics Room
This week: Study on the Book of Romans, Chapter 2 & 3
This Bible Study will be traveling through the Book of Romans while surveying God's plan of salvation for all humankind.
"Welcome to St. Martin's"
Welcome Center
You'll hear more about St. Martin's from our Lay Minister for Membership Services, and take a tour of The Church.
This week's topic: The Rich Man and Lazarus

Prior to that appointment, he served as Rector for Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Kingwood and Christ Church in Tyler, and Associate Rector at Palmer Memorial in Houston. Over the years he has served the Diocese of Texas in numerous positions, including Executive Board and Standing Committee member. He has held board positions for Camp Allen, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, St. Stephen's School, Austin, and All Saints' Episcopal School, Beaumont. He also is a past Dean of the San Jacinto Convocation and the Southeast Convocation. He was a Deputy from the Diocese of Texas to the General Convention in 1977 and 2000.
