C.C.S.C.'s "Back to School" Drive
Mark your calendars - July is the month for Christian Community Service Center's "Back to School" Drive! Thousands of children in greater Houston will begin the 2009-2010 academic year without the basic school supplies needed to succeed. You can help these students through CCSC's "Back to School" program!
Your $45 donation will provide one child with a new school uniform, shoes, and a grade-level appropriate package of new school supplies. To donate, you can enclose your cash or check in the "Clothes for Kids" envelopes located in the pew racks during July and place it in the offering. Or, send a check to St. Martin's Episcopal Church made payable to St. Martin's with the notation at the bottom, "CCSC BTS." Help a child to arrive at school on the first day of class feeling well prepared and ready to learn! |

This service honors our traditional Episcopal liturgy while fully engaging the whole family together in worship. If you are arriving at 9:00 AM, please take your children with you to the 9:00 AM service. The children will be dismissed from that service, and taken to the "Family Table" service that starts at 9:30 AM. Holy Communion and the flu (helpful information)
[Posted 4-30-2009]
Passing the peace and receiving Holy Communion should not pose a danger of infection if people are taking regular precautions.
However, communicants should be assured that:
The Exchange of the Peace does not require handshakes or hugs; a simple verbal exchange is sufficient.
Receiving just the wafer is perfectly acceptable and was for most of the Church's history the norm.
Clergy are taking extra precautions before they distribute Holy Communion.
Above all parishioners should be encouraged to stay home if they are sick or have any flu symptoms.

Serve as a Shepherd or Teacher in our B.L.A.ST. Rotation
Make a difference in the life of your child.
Your gifts are unique!
Shepherding and teaching Kindergarten-3rd grade in a rotational setting is actually easier than teaching in a traditional classroom. In our B.L.A.ST. rotation program (Bible Learning Adventure STations), each grade visits a different station for 4-5 weeks to explore the same Bible story, theme or season.
Shepherds
The adult leaders, or shepherds, tie the thread of content between all the stations in the B.L.A.ST. unit. Because children rotate to a new station each week, they do not have the opportunity to develop a relationship with one teacher over the course of the year. However, a shepherd will "travel" with the group each week to its assigned station, providing much needed continuity. It is the shepherd who knows the children by name and who has the most opportunity to talk with the children, to hear their questions, and to know what is going on in their lives. The relationship with the shepherd is, indeed, one of the most important parts of any learning program for children. The shepherd is not responsible for teaching, but does take attendance, asks for prayer requests and "checks in" with the children each week. The commitment for shepherds is one Sunday per month.
Teachers/Specialists
Unlike shepherds, the teachers in rotational settings do not move from room to room with the students. Instead, each teacher provides leadership for the specific part of the learning experience with which he or she feels most comfortable. Rotational teaching and learning provide expanded learning experiences for children, as well as opportunities for parishioners to be involved in our ministry with children. This is especially true for those who have never thought of themselves as teachers, as well as those who do not feel comfortable teaching in a traditional classroom.
In a rotational learning program, specialists are called on to lead for 4-5 consecutive weeks, teaching children about the things he or she loves most and does best. For example, someone who loves to tell stories can be available for storytelling without having to deal with music; someone who loves to cook can help with cooking without being responsible for supervising an art project. Your role as a specialist teacher in B.L.A.ST. is to implement weekly lessons that will provide each child with an opportunity to learn and grow in faith. Your role also offers you the opportunity to nurture each child, so that he or she will experience the love of Christ through you.
We are currently lining up the fall slate of teachers and shepherds. To be a part of this unique program, contact Jamie Martin Currie at 713-985-3829.

Global Prayer Group (formerly Prayer for Iraq)
Current events can leave us overwhelmed and full of questions. We have found that when we gather each week to pray, we are participating in the plan that God has for our world rather than worrying aobut things out of our control. Although we will continue to focus on our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have felt the need to pray for many of the suffering and forgotten people all over the world. This gives us a chance to respond in prayer to the commission of Christ to reach the ends of the earth in His name.
Please join the Global Prayer Group* any Monday from 4:00-5:00 PM in Room 207-209, Payne Education Center. For information, call Janie Putman.

Beginning Monday, August 10, St. Martin's will be transformed into an ancient biblical city, as our children experience "Marketplace A.D.," a Judean market. This unique event is designed especially for children to encounter the life and ministry of Jesus, through a life-sized, authentic biblical market. During each session, the tribes will travel to the city, to experience various crafts and skills, including Hebrew school, a visit to the produce and spice market, or the bakery. They may visit the various "vendors" including basket weaving, woodworking, metal working, pottery and much, much more. They may visit the various "vendors" including basket weaving, woodworking, metal working, pottery and much, much more. While in the city they will encounter Jesus and His disciples, as they go about their daily lives of spreading the gospel. Marketplace A.D. will be the Bible coming to life for the children of our Parish. It is an event not to be missed.

About Godly Play:
Godly Play is an approach to religious education which uses the sacred stories, parables and liturgical actions of the Christian faith as tools for approaching the larger questions of life. These stories and actions become the starting points for wonder and discussion. Following the Montessori tradition, the materials are always available for children to use in retelling the story, thus helping them to make the stories their own. In this Godly Play workshop, that is especially designed for beginners, you will focus on classroom management, storytelling, spiritual development of children, and program start-up and development.
About our trainer:
Lisa Mason discovered Godly Play in the mid 1990s when her parish set up Godly Play, and is blessed to see how Godly Play has enriched the lives of many children and adults ever since. She became a trainer in 2002 and enjoys helping parishes introduce Godly Play. She will graduate from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin in May and will be ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of West Texas. |

About the Family Table (Worship):
Imagine your family's life together without a family table. Difficult, right? The family of God is no different. The families with young children of St. Martin's gather weekly around our Lord's family table to worship, hear and share Holy Communion and for the pure joy of being His children. We meet Sundays, 9:30-10:15 AM in the Old Church, for child-friendly liturgy, live music, and dramatic storytelling of the Gospel. Following the "Family Table" service, children will be taken to their Christian Education classes. You may pick up your child from that class at 11:00 AM. Contact Jamie Martin Currie, Lay Minister for Children's Christian Education, at 713/985-3829.
About Godly Play:
Godly Play enables children to experience the presence of a loving God and discover how to speak the language of their biblical faith. The creator of this Montessori based curriculum, the Rev. Dr. Jerome W. Berry man teaches here at St. Martin's along with trained and accredited leaders. Contact Jamie Martin Currie, Lay Minister for Children's Christian Education, at 713/985-3829.

The O.P.U.S. Bible Study is a group of men and women age 55 and up who gather once a week on Tuesdays, 11:00 AM-12:00 PM, for fellowship and Bible Study. Many then continue their fellowship with lunch at Cafe St. Martin's.
Under the leadership of the Rev. John R. Bentley, Jr., our mentor, we are studying "Adventures in the Bible ..." weekly journeys through the pages of the world's most significant book ... a road map to biblical understanding; examining the lives of saints and sinners throughout the Bible.
Once a month (beginning in September, 2009), on the "Second Tuesday" of each month, O.P.U.S. will have a variety of guest speakers, musical groups and other special activities. O.P.U.S. "Second Tuesdays" begin at 11:00 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM.
There is no fee other than the cost of lunch at the Cafe. Please join us for fun, fellowship, food and spiritual growth.
Our Deacon is the Rev. Jim Cunningham, and our President and Convenor is Janie Martin. New members are always welcome - this group is open to all, especially those 55+. Contact Janie Martin.

They may visit the various "vendors" including basket weaving, woodworking, metal working, pottery and much, much more. St. Martin's Choir (rehearsal)
St. Martin's Choir is a rewarding place of service to the Lord and our congregation. Singing for the 9:00 and 11:15 AM services, the Choir enjoys being accompanied by our terrific Gloria Dei Organ. A variety of classical music, renewal songs and traditional hymns give members opportunities to learn and appreciate the many different styles of sacred music composed for Christians and the Church. Part singing is a standard practice. New members find strong support from seasoned singers in the Choir who provide encouragement and support. Try us out! We're welcoming and pleased to see new faces. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:15 PM in the Choir Hall. Child care is available. Contact David Henning, D.M.A. at 713/985-3820.

Texas Water Mission Trips (off campus)
Since 2002, the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas has been involved in an exciting outreach bringing "Living Water" to people in Honduras through the Honduras Water Ministry (HWM). More recently, a parent organization, the Texas Water Mission (TWM), was established to raise funds for expanding the program to support communities in developing countries, beginning with rural Mexico. Thanks to the support of many partners, including St. Martin's, HWM has drilled 41 water wells, providing safe drinking water to over 20,000 Hondurans in remote communities. In addition to drilling new water wells, HWM also provides testing and monitoring of water quality, well maintenance and pump repair, teaching sustainable health and hygiene skills and sharing the gospel of Christ by ministering to children and adults in the communities served. TWM invites you to share the joy of bringing "Living Water" to people in need by becoming a volunteer for the 2009 mission trips to Honduras:
Thursday, July 30-Saturday, August 8
Thursday, October 15-Saturday, October 24
