The Rev. Martin J. Bastian
The Rev. Martin J. Bastian returns to St. Martin’s as head of the pastoral care department. He brings with him years of experience working closely with individuals and families alike. The pursuit of true “self” is key to his ministry with the goal of helping people come to a greater understanding of themselves and how God has designed them.
Marty has an undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Kansas. Following graduation he moved to Washington DC where he had a career in publishing and served as a lay leader in youth ministry.
Marty graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1996 with a Master’s of Divinity Degree. After his ordination to the deaconate in the Diocese of Virginia he began his ordained ministry here at St. Martin’s.
Marty spent a decade as Senior Chaplain of Episcopal High School. As the head of EHS’s “Religion Pillar,” Marty served as educator, administrator and spiritual leader while also assisting the Head of School in the day to day operations of the school. His unique relational approach to ministry endeared him to the EHS community. As Senior Chaplain he also established a non-profit national organization called “NPN” or “The National Parenting Network” to assist parents in the understanding and rearing of their teenage children. He has spoken across the country in churches and schools alike with the message of “enlightening, educating and empowering” parents in their calling.
Marty’s heart lies in education. He approaches his work with a solid biblical starting point coupled with a realistic and raw view of his own humanity and the humanity of others. One’s hunger and need for God in Jesus Christ is central to his ministry.
