Mon., Feb 06Women Achieving Balance - covering the book, "Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive"
This 9-week study will focus on the book, Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive, by Joan Borysenko. What happened to the spark you had as a child that powered curiosity, engagement with life, and creativity? Has it burned out? Are you feeling emotionally and physically exhausted and cynical, wondering if you've got what it takes to make it in this rapidly changing world? Burnout looks a lot like depression, but it's not a biological bogeyman that medication or simple stress management can cure. It's a disorder of hope that sucks the life out of competent, idealistic, hardworking people like you; and it will be an ongoing challenge for you to take your power back!

In this breakthrough work, Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.-a Harvard-trained medical scientist, psychologist, and renowned pioneer in stress and health-straddles psychology, biology, and soul in a completely fresh approach to burnout. Joan's deeply human (and often amusing) personal accounts of burnout and recovery; the science of helplessness, hopelessness, and empowerment; and the rich wisdom of people who have gone from fried to revived-including many of Joan's vibrant community of 5,000 Facebook Friends-make this powerful and practical book a must-read for our times.

Please join us over 9 weeks, Monday, January 23-March 19, from 7:00-8:30 PM in Room 203, Payne Education Center. Participants may enter the class at any time. There is no charge to attend, but please purchase the book online or in bookstores prior to attending.

Wed., Feb 08Faith in Literature "Day Group"
The Faith in Literature groups meet monthly to explore, discuss and make relevant connections between faith and works of fiction, past and present. While operating within the framework of Christian theology, we seek to ascertain in our reading how all good literature, if even by its omission, deals with and reflects themes of faith. Our reading choices range from early nineteenth century works to present day authors. While staying primarily within the confines of fiction (with occasional forays into the nonfiction world), the books we read cover a multitude of genres, including crime, science fiction, allegory, young adult, historic and just good story telling.

We delight in God's gifts to authors, through their words, to prod, soothe, challenge, confound, and reveal grace in the lives of their characters, and reflect on our own frail likeness to these fictional beings. In sharing our passion for literature, the groups also share laughter, friendship and fellowship. The day group meets for lunch in St. Elisabeth's Refectory before their meetings. The evening group has at least one yearly "off-site" gathering, recently taking in "The Heiress" in conjunction with reading Washington Square, by Henry James.

Come join us for a thought-provoking, Christ-centered, joyful examination of the beauty we find through the written word.

The Faith in Literature day group will meet on Wednesday, February 8, 12:30-2:00 PM in Room 217, Payne Education Center. For more information, please contact Camille Powell.

Mon., Feb 27Women Achieving Balance - covering the book, "Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive"

Wed., Mar 07Faith in Literature Day Group

The Faith in Literature day group will meet on Wednesday, March 7, 12:30-2:00 PM in Room 217, Payne Education Center. For more information, please contact Camille Powell.

Mon., Mar 19Women Achieving Balance - covering the book, "Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive"

  • Tue., Mar 20Faith in Literature Night Group; our book is "End of Manners"
The next meeting is Tuesday, March 20, from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Parlor. Our book is End of Manners by Francesca Marciano. For information about the night group, please contact Lori Smythe.

Wed., Apr 11Faith in Literature Day Group

The Faith in Literature day group will meet on Wednesday, April 11, 12:30-2:00 PM in Room 217, Payne Education Center. For more information, please contact Camille Powell.

Wed., May 09Faith in Literature Day Group

The Faith in Literature day group will meet on Wednesday, May 9, 12:30-2:00 PM in Room 217, Payne Education Center. For more information, please contact Camille Powell.
