The Rev. Jerald W. Hyche
The Rev. Jerald Hyche is Associate Rector of Discipleship and Spiritual Formation. He was called to St. Martin's in the fall of 2006 from St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope, Alabama, where he had been curate since graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2004.
Before entering the ordained ministry, he worked as a journalist at newspapers across the South, reporting and editing stories on a wide variety of issues. A native of Alabama, he most recently worked as business editor of The Mobile (AL) Register. His writing and media skills have followed him into the ordained ministry; he has served as chairman of the Communications Commission for the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast as well as editor of its monthly newspaper, The Coastline.
As a priest and a journalist, Father Hyche says he sees many similarities in the two vocations, both of which are based in a search for truth and fairness for all. He also considers the intimate relationship between the written word and the Word of God as a central element of his ministry.
Father Hyche defines the Christian life as relationship with God and with neighbor, a perspective that attracted him to focus on urban and family issues as a reporter, and one that continues to shape his work as a priest. Father Hyche and his wife, Colleen, have three daughters: Melanie, 16; Suzannah, 14; and Caroline, 11. They live with Beauregard, a King Charles Spaniel, and Sammy the Cat.
