Wed., Feb 10Faith in Literature Day Group
The Faith in Literature groups meet monthly to explore, discuss and make relevant connections between faith and works of fiction, past and present. While operating within the framework of Christian theology, we seek to ascertain in our reading how all good literature, if even by its omission, deals with and reflects themes of faith. Our reading choices range from early nineteenth century works to present day authors. While staying primarily within the confines of fiction (with occasional forays into the nonfiction world), the books we read cover a multitude of genres, including crime, science fiction, allegory, young adult, historic and just good story telling.

We delight in God's gifts to authors, through their words, to prod, soothe, challenge, confound, and reveal grace in the lives of their characters, and reflect on our own frail likeness to these fictional beings. In sharing our passion for literature, the groups also share laughter, friendship and fellowship. The day group meets for lunch in St. Elisabeth's Refectory before their meetings. The evening group has at least one yearly "off-site" gathering, recently taking in "The Heiress" in conjunction with reading Washington Square, by Henry James.

Come join us for a thought-provoking, Christ-centered, joyful examination of the beauty we find through the written word.

Sun., Feb 14Holy Eucharist and the flu (helpful information)
    [Posted 4-30-2009]

Passing the peace and receiving Holy Eucharist should not pose a danger of infection if people are taking regular precautions.

However, communicants should be assured that:
  • The Exchange of the Peace does not require handshakes or hugs; a simple verbal exchange is sufficient.
  • Receiving just the wafer is perfectly acceptable and was for most of the Church's history the norm.
  • Clergy are taking extra precautions before they distribute Holy Eucharist.

  • Above all parishioners should be encouraged to stay home if they are sick or have any flu symptoms.

Come join us for a thought-provoking, Christ-centered, joyful examination of the beauty we find through the written word.

The next meeting is Tuesday, February 16, from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Parlor. Our book is Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout. For information about the night group, please contact Lori Smythe.

Tue., Feb 16Greenlaw Lecture Series: "Dear Abbeys" Monks & Monasteries of Europe (Tuesday morning or evening)
"Dear Abbeys" Monks & Monasteries of Europe

    Lecturer: Barry A. Greenlaw

Do you know the difference between a monastery and an abbey, a convent and a nunnery? Can you tell a Benedictine from a Cistercian? What did St. Bernard have against St. Benedict? Did charity really begin at home? How did Bede become Venerable, and why did Hilda summer in Whitby? If you were a guest in a monastery would you know the difference between the cellerarium and the necessarium (you had better)? Why did the pilgrim cross the road? If you have been staying awake at nights puzzling over the answers to these and similar questions, then you will want to enroll in this 10-week course, to be presented this spring at St. Martin's Activity Center.

From their establishment in Egypt, we will follow the fascinating history of the religious house of medieval Europe, the Orders, their Practices, their Buildings, and eventually their demise. We'll look at the great houses of France (Cluny, Mont St. Michel), Austria (Melk), Spain (Montserrat), Greece (Mt. Athos), and of course England (Fountains, Westminster Abbey) among many others. And we will conclude with the story of the Dissolution of the English houses under Henry VIII, and a consideration of the surviving (and surprising) remains.

This 10-week course will be presented three times each week - on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and on Tuesday evenings. The classes will begin on February 16-17, and conclude on April 27-28. There will be a one-week break April 6-7.

If you have questions or need further information, please call Barry Greenlaw at 713/781-9028.

FEE: $175 ($100 for either half, Sessions I-V or VI-X)
Please indicate which session you are signing up for.
  • Tuesday morning, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday morning, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Wed., Feb 17A Week of Prayer (youth)
Every great epoch of growth in the history of the Church has been brought about by prayer. The Church was born on Pentecost by those who "joined together constantly in prayer." [Acts 1:14] Starting in the 18th century, Moravian monks prayed 24 hours a day for more than a hundred years.

During the week of February 17-24, the youth of St. Martin's will join together for a week of 24 hour prayer. We will take one hour shifts and ensure that at least one member of our community is praying at all times.

Fri., Feb 19Training classes for those interested in becoming a CanCare volunteer (off campus)
[This is not a St. Martin's event.]

CanCare, Inc., a Houston-based nonprofit organization that offers emotional support to cancer patients and their families through a network of more than 600 volunteers, has announced volunteer training classes to be held February 19-21, 2010. The classes are open to people of all faiths who want to help others who have been diagnosed with cancer.

To become a CanCare volunteer, you must either be a cancer survivor who has been finished with treatments for at least six months, or have been the caregiver/family member of a cancer survivor. CanCare volunteers act as mentors to patients during their treatment, and work with family members to provide encouragement and hope.

Nancy Tucker, President of CanCare and 19-year thyroid cancer survivor says, "I have been there myself and know what its like to have cancer. When a CanCare volunteer tells someone they know how it feels, it's not a figure of speech. We are a group of compassionate people who are willing to relive a very hard time in our lives by using our own experience with cancer to help others remain hopeful." Opportunities are also available for CanCare volunteers to make hospital visits to cancer patients by volunteering in a number of Houston-area hospitals.

Applicants must go through an interview process before attending the training session. To fill out an application and for more information about becoming a CanCare volunteer, please call the CanCare office at 713-461-0028 or visit www.cancare.org.

    About CanCare, Inc.
CanCare provides one-on-one emotional support to cancer patients and their families from a trained volunteer who has survived a similar type of cancer. Founded in 1990, CanCare now partners with more than 100 corporations, hospitals and congregations of varied faiths. All of our services are confidential and provided without charge. Sun., Feb 21Holy Eucharist and the flu (helpful information)

The Vision and Plan for St. Martin's Future
    A Conversation with the Rector

As announced at our 57th Annual Parish Meeting, we are launching our Capital Campaign effort, Building for Life, to move forward on the opportunity to retire the debt on the property we purchased in 2007, and to begin the first phases of a multi-phased Master Plan. I want to give you an opportunity to consider how we arrived at this important moment, but also the fruit of the labor of our Master Planning Committee and Vestry in determining the best first step of our efforts to create new and enhance existing physical plant changes on our wonderful campus in ways that will continue to grow our ability to share the Gospel of Christ, continue the work of making disciples for Him and better minister to the greater Houston community.

Below you will see several dates at varying times that will give us an opportunity to be together. I hope you will mark your calendar for one of these dates.

Many thanks and I look forward to being with you!

Mon., Feb 22A Week of Prayer (youth)
Every great epoch of growth in the history of the Church has been brought about by prayer. The Church was born on Pentecost by those who "joined together constantly in prayer." [Acts 1:14] Starting in the 18th century, Moravian monks prayed 24 hours a day for more than a hundred years.

During the week of February 17-24, the youth of St. Martin's will join together for a week of 24 hour prayer. We will take one hour shifts and ensure that at least one member of our community is praying at all times.

Contact Barry Moore at 713/985-3842 for more information.

As Jonah found out, the choices we make affect ourselves and other people. After five weeks of exploring these ideas through computer resources, music, science, art and storytelling, all children will understand how God provides us with the tools, techniques and resources we need to make wise and appropriate choices.

Meet in St. Elisabeth's Refectory first for our special children's Lenten dinner. We will all go to Payne Education Center together at 6:00 PM. Those who don't dine with us may go directly to Payne Education Center at 6:00 PM.

Sun., Feb 28Holy Eucharist and the flu (helpful information)

    Building for Life
The Vision and Plan for St.

Mon., Mar 01Neidinger Lecture Series: "From Achilles to Alexander: The History of Ancient Greek Civilization" - Part II
From Achilles to Alexander: The History of Ancient Greek Civilization

The Great Shah-n-Shah, the King of Kings, Master of the Earth Xerxes, the Lord of the Four Quarters dismissed them (the Greeks) as a gaggle of impudent rabble rousers. It was a mistake his predecessors and ancestors also had made. The Lord of the Four Quarters descended upon the Greeks with an army and navy of over a million men, the legend says. One year later his armada lay at the bottom of the sea and the bones of his soldiers lay scattered all over Greece.

Ever a fractious bunch, the ancient Greeks could pull together when occasion demanded and perform incredible feats. But many suspected that it was, in fact, their perennial fractiousness that propelled them to their landmark accomplishments in war, politics, art, architecture, philosophy and theology.

They worshipped the same gods, they spoke mutually intelligible dialects, they had a common literary heritage, they all hailed Achilles as the greatest of warriors, they traded with one another, and they warred against one another. Not until the "semi-barbaric" Alexander brought them to heel did the land of the Greeks feel the winds of peace - but only briefly.

In this two-part series of lectures we will trace the rise and fall of ancient Greek civilization from its Bronze Age beginnings in the Aegean to the three-continent empire of Alexander the Great; and, finally, examine the continuing legacy of ancient Greece.

    PART I: Mondays, January 25 - February 22, 2010; 7:00-8:30 p.m.
    1. The Minoan Thalassocracy.
    2. The Mycenaeans: Warriors and Merchants.
    3. The Wrath of Achilles: The Trojan War.
    4. Greeks are Political Animals: The Polis.
    5. The Golden Age of Ancient Greece.

    PART II: Mondays, March 1 - 29, 2010; 7:00-8:30 p.m.
    6. Suicide: The Peloponnesian War.
    7. The Rise of the Macedonians.
    8. Alexander the Great.
    9. The Hellenistic Empires.
    10. The Legacy of Ancient Greece.
