The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman
The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman is the Associate Rector for Outreach and Family and Young Adult Ministries.
The Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman was born in Houston, but his childhood took him to Mexico City; Washington, D.C.; Stockholm, Sweden; and Los Angeles, California before finally settling in his hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was there that he had a spiritual awakening and sensed a call to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.
Aaron received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Science, magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1999. Then he spent two years as a teacher, campus minister, and non-profit director in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
After returning to the United States, Aaron worked as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School, writing case studies on compensation, incentives, and corporate governance. He also spent several years as an Executive Compensation Analyst with H.J. Heinz in Pittsburgh.
He received his Master of Divinity from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in 2008. After ordination, he served as Assistant Rector at St. Stephen’s Church in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Aaron founded and directed Anchor, a ministry for young adults. An aficionado of music, TV, movies, and all things pop culture, Aaron developed several lecture series and Bible studies which used cultural artifacts to explore Christian themes. These include The Gospel According to The Office; (Can’t Get No) Satisfaction: Human Longing in Rock n Roll; and Ashton Was Wrong: Jesus is Not Your Homeboy.
Aaron has worked closely with several Christian ministries over the years including Cru, Young Life, and Harvard Christian Impact. He is a regular contributor to the widely-read blog of Mockingbird Ministries (www.mbird.com). Aaron’s focus in ministry is to tell people about the radical grace of God in Jesus Christ, and to connect that message to the rubber-meets-the-road reality of their lives.
Aaron met his Detroit-born wife Andrea while they were both working overseas, and they married in 2002. While in Pittsburgh, Andrea was the founding director of a vibrant ministry for single mothers called Side by Side. They are proud parents of three children, Abigail (7), Athan (5), and August (3). Abigail and Athan attend St. Thomas’ Episcopal School and August attends (and loves!) our own St. Martin’s Preschool.*
