Spiritual Formation

Sundays
Chapel Reception Hall

The Rev. Sharron L. Cox continues offering short classes related to Christian spirituality and formation.

Praying the Lord’s Prayer
Sept. 10, 17 and 24
Note. The Sept. 17 class will be in the Vestry Conference Room.
“Teach us to pray,” the disciples asked their Master. In this class, we will look closely at the elements of the Lord’s Prayer, what they might have meant when Jesus spoke to them and what they might mean for us today.

Praying the Jesus Prayer
Oct. 22 and 29
St. Paul wrote, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing  of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) What did Paul mean by “renewing of your minds”? Some believe the “Jesus Prayer” is the means to respond to this charge. Long an essential prayer of the Eastern Church, the Jesus Prayer belies its power with its simplicity.

Praying using Icons
Jan. 28 and Feb. 4
For the last three years, St. Martin’s has hosted an iconographer-in-residence during Lent to lead a retreat in which those who attend may “write” an icon. These objects of piety and prayer are new to many, but the Eastern Church has long incorporated icons in its worship and personal piety.
