Theology Live!

What does it mean that we’re saved by God’s grace through faith?  What does it mean to be human in the brave new world of AI and digital technology?  Why did God create us in His image male and female?  Sometimes it’s easier (and more fun) to ask these questions at a café or pub with friends than in Sunday school.  That’s why we’re hitting the road this summer, spending three evenings at New Magnolia Brewing Co. with some great speakers, good conversation, and good company.  Invite a friend and join us!

Thursdays, July 16, 30; Aug. 13
7-8:15 p.m.
New Magnolia Brewery: 1616 Bevis St, Houston, TX 77008

July 16: Why Grace Matters, with the Rev. Dane Boston
Five hundred years ago in the Protestant Reformation, the reformers issued the rallying cry that our salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.  What does this mean for us today?  How are we saved by God’s grace, and what difference does it make in our lives?  We’ll be led by the Rev. Dane Boston, the Fifth Rector of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and previously Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, S.C.  He is a graduate of Washington and Lee University and Yale Divinity School, and he and his wife Debby have four children.

July 30:  Keeping it Real in a Virtual Age: AI, Screens, and Being Human, with the Rev. Dr. Jordan Hylden
More and more of our life is now lived online.  With the advent of AI, it may be that even more of our lives will be uploaded to the cloud.  Yet, at the same time, human happiness does not seem to be increasing.  How do we understand what it means to be human?  With help from Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, we’ll explore God’s enduring call to us as humans created in His image.  We’ll be led by the Rev. Dr. Jordan Hylden, Associate Rector for Christian Education at St. Martin’s and previously Canon Theologian for the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.  He is a graduate of Duke University (Th.D., M.Div.), and he and his wife Emily have four children.

Aug. 13:  One Flesh: Men and Women in the Body of Christ, with Dr. Kira Moolman Pettit
Increasingly, men and women today are worlds apart.  Too often, we view each other with incomprehension, and worry that we are at cross purposes with each other.  Yet, we are told by Scripture that we are created in God’s image as male and female: together, not apart.  How can we understand what this means, and live it out better in our lives as disciples of Jesus in one body, the Church?  We’ll be led by Dr. Kira Moolman Pettit, Director of Adult Formation at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.  Her Ph.D. is from Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto, and she and her husband, the Rev. Trent Pettit, are blessed with an adorable baby girl.
